Early Head Start Parent Recognized by Community Action, Inc.
The board of directors and staff of Community Action, Inc., Topeka, celebrated the past year's accomplishments during the agency's annual meeting last month.
Tamika Sellars was awarded as the Bill
McCormick Community Action Person of the Year. This award recognizes an
individual who has made a significant contribution to a specific
activity or who has made an outstanding long-term effort that has
furthered progress toward the achievement of agency goals.
Tamika is the parent of a child in Early Head Start at Community Action, Inc. She has taken a strong leadership position in advocacy at the local, state, and national level. Within the past year she has attended Head Start conferences, visited congressional representatives in Washington, testified before State Senate and House Committees, churches, and businesses and become a member of the Kansas Head Start Association's Board of Directors.
"Having a child and going through tough times," Tamika said, "I understand the value of educating ourselves and our children. Also, when we're older, it's our young who take care of us. We need to have them ready to do that."
