Kansas and Region VII Head Start Associations Recognize Excellence

On Thursday, May 21, Kay Mitchell was presented the Region VII Tom Mayer Award of Excellence as part of the closing session of the Region VII Head Start Association Leadership Conference.  This award was initiated to recognize outstanding contributions in the world of Head Start.  The recipient should have demonstrated flexibility withing their career and have had a variety of experiences with Head Start.  Nominations are supported by letters from a Head Start director, a Head Start staff member, a Head Start parent, and a community member.

Kay Mitchell has worked in the early childhood field for over 20 years, currently as a classroom teacher for Graham County Head Start.  She has taught at Colby Community College, is a CDA adviser, and the local sponsor for Family Career and Community Leaders of America.  In 2002, Kay joined the Kansas Head Start Association (KHSA) Board, serving for five years, two of which as Board President.  Her passion for children and families helped to ensure that they were the primary focus of all KHSA's efforts.  Kay carried that focus into her roles as Region VII Staff representative, R7HSA President, and NHSA Board member.  At all levels, Kay has brought the values of respect, inclusiveness and best practice into each association.
